Dorchester

The authentic eastern shore landscape and traditional way of life along the Chesapeake are still evident in Dorchester County, with its pristine rivers, marshlands, working boats, and quaint waterfront towns and villages. Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge is located in Dorchester. Thousands of birds and waterfowl take refuge here in spring and fall. Blackwater NWR is a bird watcher’s dream due to its location along the Atlantic Flyway.

Birdwatching and nature walks are available year-round at Blackwater’s 27,000 acres of wetlands and brackish tidal marshes. Guided tours are available, but cycling and hiking through the refuge can also be exciting.
